PRIDE AND PRIDE ALLY QUILTS
Turtle Shell Quilts is proud to introduce my creative rendition using colors, fabrics, and shapes to produce one of a kind, subtle and not so subtle PRIDE and PRIDE ALLY inspired handmade couch quilts to suit every personality.
Colors may not be the exact saturation or brightness to Pride flag colors, however they are very closely matched with their own unique texture of color on color patterns adding movement
and interest to the final piece.

My goal is to create something beautiful to be admired and offer comfort and warmth to each recipient in hopes that they feel the love and support
I stitch into each of my quilts.

WELCOME FRIENDS
My name is Michelle (AKA Shell). I live in the peaceful country side of Turtle Valley, which is where Turtle Shell Quilts was born.
I was introduced to quilting over 25 years ago and absolutely fell in love with the outlet it gave me to unleash my creativity and .... lets face it, buy pretty fabric.

Over the years, I have made an abundance of quilts for my family and friends. Recently, I decided it was time to start making quilts to sell. More specifically, PRIDE and PRIDE ALLY quilts. What better way to combine my passion of quilting while showing my love and support for my Transfeminine child. She has shown incredible strength and courage to live her best life, content and beautiful inside and out. I am so grateful to be a part of her journey.

My sister, Brandy, at Dragonfly Dreams Custom Quilts in beautiful Parksville BC, has joined me in my quilting venture. She uses her Long arm quilt machine to stitch beautiful designs in thread on top all my quilts.

WHY DOES A HANDMADE QUILT COST SO MUCH?
THE COST OF QUILTING
Most people are not aware of the cost and time involved in creating a beautiful quilt. My couch quilts use approximately 5 meters of quality quilters 100% cotton fabrics, averaging $22.00 per meter plus tax. I use extra wide Fireside backing for softness and to eliminate any seams on the back side of your quilt, averaging $65.00 per quilt.

Each quilt is sent to my Long Arm Quilter at Dragonfly Dreams Custom Quilts, who supplies the batting that makes up the middle layer of the quilt for added warmth. She does a fantastic job finishing each quilt by stitching all 3 layers together with coordinating threads, in an array of patterns from her collection, to compliment each quilt I have created. Machine quilting plays a huge role in the stability of holding the layers together and takes the tension off the seams within the quilt pattern. The average cost is $135 (depending on the size of quilt) for her time, expertise, batting, thread and machine.
Finally, I add a coordinating binding to complete the edges of each quilt.

Countless hours go into quilting. Quilters know we will not get rich making handmade quilts,
we do it because it is our creative passion.
QUILT CARE

My handmade quilts consist of hundreds of pieces of fabrics stitched together using cotton thread to create a one of a kind design. I use quality 100% quilters cotton, medium weight fabrics that are sturdy and meant to withstand multiple washes. Using cotton thread and fabrics ensures your new quilt will shrink up evenly when washed for the first time into a perfectly puckered, softened, quilt.

ALWAYS wash your quilt on the gentle cycle in COLD water with a small amount of mild detergent. Best practice is to hang dry, then tumble dry on the lowest dryer setting to softened your quilt for a few minutes.

Vibrant colored fabrics may have the potential to 'run' into lighter fabrics within the quilt when washed. To help set the colors and minimize the possibility of color transfer, use the Dye Catcher sheets, I will include when shipped, in the washing machine for your quilts first wash.

Wash your quilt separately from other laundry.
Take your wet quilt from the washing machine immediately when the cycle is finished, as dye in wet fabrics can transfer more easily, then hang to dry.

Colors in the fabrics will fade over time and wash, just like a favorite shirt. Your quilt is intended to be used and enjoyed!
